Japan Day 13 - Owl Cafe and Home Again

On our last day in Japan, we circled back to the beginning to visit Akihabara again, this time with Cackett. Our flight didn't leave until early evening, so we had most of the day to explore. We visited the board game store again, and found our way a yo-yo store (Spingear) that we didn't know about the first time.

From there we worked our way to the other side of Akihabara to look for an owl cafe. Much like the cat cafe in Harajuku, an owl cafe is a place to go and hang out with owls while having a drink. We all declined the drink since it seemed weird to be drinking or eating in the presence of wild animals, but we did check out a lot of the owls.

It was a little strange and uncomfortable, since it was hard to say whether the owls were really happy, but I will admit it was cool and a pretty unique experience. Owls aren't the only kind of cafe popular in Japan - lots of cats, dogs, hedgehogs, you name it, but they are one of the more interesting ones, since it's definitely not something you'd see here in the states. We were certainly charmed by them, from large to small.

After the owl cafe we had a nice lunch where we had eaten before - one more chance for me to get salt-roasted fish (yum!), and enjoy the view over Tokyo from the 8th floor.

After lunch we hit up one of the many multi-story arcades in the area, trying our luck at the claw machines (totally impossible), and marveling at the gamers playing everything from VR to Dancing games to games involving sliding cards around the playing surface. Charlie and Cackett did give a "physical" Pong game a go, which was pretty entertaining.

Then it was off to the hotel to pick up our luggage and head to the airport for our flight home. It was a long trek home, with layovers in both San Fransisco, which was long enough to warrant a day pass to the American Airlines Lounge - showers included!, and in Charlotte. Unfortunately, there was a hurricane, tropical storm by that point, wandering its way through the Carolinas when we flew in, but somehow our flights were all on time.

We were glad to arrive home, get some sleep, and relax before the next week began. All in all, it was a wonderful trip, and I was so glad to introduce Charlie to Japan, such a huge part of my life. Until next time!
