Bavaria Day 1 - Arrival in Munich

Shout out once again to Scott's Cheap Flight deals for helping us to find a great deal, this time to Munich! I had been to Bavaria once before as part of an engineering trip in college, but this was Charlie's first time. I think I won him over on the idea of heading to Germany with one word: Pretzels! My goal for the trip was to eat at least one pretzel a day.

Our flight across the Atlantic was through Detroit, then overnight to Munich, about 7.5 hours. We landed around 8:30am local time, and upon exiting the airplane got on a bus to take us to the terminal and immigration/customs. Once through, we headed into the main body of the airport to pick up our car, and waiting for us near the car rental desk was a grocery store and... bakery! We were both a bit hungry for breakfast so of course we picked up our first pretzels of the trip, and they made our time waiting in line for the car 100% more delicious. I had originally thought we'd get a Volkswagen Golf, but we ended up in a Rennault, slightly larger than I'd thought, and a manual. Luckily, driving a stick seems to be like riding a bike and I did just fine.

Since we couldn't check into our hotel until afternoon, and it was quite a cold day (around 40-45 degrees), we decided to aim for the Deutsches Museum. The Deutsches Museum is a huge science and technology museum that covers every facet you could imagine from a super cool mining exhibit consisting of a fake mine in the basement floors, through computing technology. We checked out the mine, the pharmaceutical exhibit with walk-in cell, and the computing technology exhibit that sported mathematical instruments from the abacus, to adding machines, to some pretty impressive old IBM computers, to the first few PCs. It was really neat to not only see some of the IBM computers I've heard so much about but to also get to see the insides since they had a cabinet or two on each one opened up.

After a few hours we were falling asleep on our feet, so we decided to take a break for lunch in the museum cafeteria. I had a bratwurst and sauerkraut (yum!), and Charlie had the first schnitzel of the trip with some fantastic french fries. Fueled up, we headed off to check into our hotel and explore the city a little. As we exited the museum it was actually snowing outside, not what we expected for May, but hey. Better than cold rain!

Our hotel was situated right on the edge of the old part of Munich, and turned out to be a fantastic home base from which to explore the city sights on foot. We dropped our bags and took a short break to watch a little Netflix before setting out again. We wandered over to Marienplatz, the main square in the old city, then on to see a few amazing old churches and buildings. We stopped back into Marienplatz for dinner at a lovely restaurant called Ratskeller. After dinner it was back to the hotel for bedtime at a respectable 9pm.
